🍂 Blessed🍂

There’s a song by Seph Schlueter called Counting My Blessings, and there is one thought from it that has been staying with me:

He sings, "I could keep counting my blessings and still never count that high."

Lately, I’ve been thinking about what it actually means to be blessed. For a long time, I think I associated blessing with the things we tend to notice easily...

  • A financial blessing.
  • A beautiful home.
  • A new car.
  • An opportunity.
  • Success.

Something big enough that when it happens, you immediately recognize it and say, “Wow. God blessed me.” And those things absolutely can be blessings.

But years ago, a friend helped me see blessing differently... She started pointing out things I hadn’t necessarily been counting.

  • My health.
  • Food in my refrigerator.
  • Money in the bank.
  • Clothes in my closet. Not just enough clothes, but enough that there are things I can give away because I don’t need them anymore.
  • Gas in my car.
  • A husband I love sharing my life with.
  • Children who love Jesus and are growing and learning and trying.
  • People I can call.
  • A home where ordinary life gets to happen.

None of those things felt particularly spectacular when I was standing in the middle of them. They were just... life. But maybe that’s exactly why we miss so many blessings.

Sometimes blessing doesn’t arrive with trumpets. Sometimes it looks like opening the refrigerator and having choices. Sometimes it is turning the key and knowing there is enough gas to get where you need to go. Sometimes it is looking across the room at the people you love. Sometimes it is realizing your body carried you through another day. Sometimes it is having a few dollars left in the bank. Sometimes it is having more than you need and being able to give some of it away. And sometimes blessing can even hide inside something we might be tempted to call small.

Right now, my little corner of the internet is exactly that: little. I don't have thousands of people watching what I do. And strangely enough, I feel blessed by that too. There is room for me to breathe. There isn’t enormous pressure to perform. I get to create, write, learn, pray, experiment, and see where God takes it. Maybe someday that will look different.

But today? Knowing that God orders my steps is the biggest blessing.

I’m beginning to think that blessing has much less to do with having an impressive life and much more to do with recognizing the goodness of God already woven through the life I have.

And when I really begin looking... I have more blessings than I know how to count. The obvious ones. The tiny ones. The ones I prayed for. The ones I never thought to pray for because I didn’t realize how precious they were.

So I’m still counting... and I hope you are too...

And I have a feeling we're never going to count that high. 🤎
