I’ve been thinking about the difference between thankfulness and gratitude. They’re close, but I don’t think they’re exactly the same.

Thankfulness often responds to something someone has done.

Thank you for the ice cream.
Thank you for helping me.
Thank you for making dinner.
Thank you for showing up.

And those things matter. Saying thank you matters.

But gratitude feels deeper to me.

Gratitude feels less like, “Thank you for what you did,” and more like, “I’m grateful that you are in my life.”

I have a few friends I feel this way about. Every once in a while, I’ll call one of them for no particular reason and say, “I’m just really grateful that you’re my friend.”

We don’t talk every day. We don’t have to.

I’m not thanking her for a favor or something she just did for me. I’m grateful for her presence. I’m grateful that she exists in my life. I’m grateful for the history we share, the conversations we’ve had, the moments she has been there, and even simply knowing that she is someone I can call.

And I have a feeling someone may already be coming to mind for you.

I think gratitude does that. It causes us to look beyond the gift and recognize the goodness underneath it.

I can be thankful for my home, but grateful for the life that happens inside of it. I can be thankful for someone helping me, but grateful that I am loved. I can be thankful for answered prayer, but grateful that God hears me. 

Maybe thankfulness says, “Thank You for this.” And gratitude says, “Thank You for being who You are.”

There is something beautiful about taking time to tell people that. Not because they did something extraordinary today. Not because we need anything from them. Simply because their presence has mattered.

So today I’m thinking about the people I’m grateful for. The ones whose names make me smile. The ones God has woven into my life in ways both big and small. And maybe there is someone in your life who needs to hear it too.

Not just, “Thank you.”

But, “I’m grateful for you.”
